This teaser for AUSPICA* is the starting point. The essay-film will be edited over the course of the residency.

The summer residency exhibition is conceived as an open and process-oriented artistic program centered on the development of AUSPICIA*, a non-fiction essay film by Spanish filmmaker and artist Maria Gisèle Royo.

AUSPICIA* takes its name from the ancient Roman practice of reading patterns in the flight of birds; the augural rite of learning to see, from a distance, what cannot be understood from within. This film begins with a question that is both ancient and intimate: what does it take to recognize a pattern you are living inside of? The film traces one woman's learning to read the patterns first in nature, then in her own behavior: how the murmuration teaches distance, how distance makes the shape visible, and how seeing the shape is what makes it possible, finally, to draw the line. The rough cut exists. The material is there. What remains is the act of listening to it differently.

Over the course of six weeks, the gallery space will function simultaneously as an editing studio, research environment, exhibition space, and public site of encounter. Located in Galerie And's street-front space, the residency is designed to make artistic production visible and accessible. The program invites audiences into direct proximity with the creative process through open studio access, collaborative sessions, public discussions, and a final screening event.
